Depth cameras allow easy segmentation of objects and people within a scene. In many cases this can be done more easily and reliably than in a standard colour or black and white image. The figure below shows a scene containing a badminton player, as seen by a colour camera (on the left) and a depth camera (on the right). The edge of the player is easily distinguished in the depth image; complicated backgrounds can confuse edge detection in a black and white or colour image.
With information regarding the pixel location of objects and people within an image, metrics such as 3D location or frontal area can be calculated.
